Social listening vs social monitoring
The short answer
Social monitoring catches single mentions so someone can reply. Social listening reads them all together to find a pattern. One is an inbox, one is research.
| Social listening | Social monitoring | |
|---|---|---|
| Unit | The whole pile of mentions | One mention at a time |
| Question | What are people saying, and is it changing? | Who just mentioned us? |
| Speed | Weekly or monthly | Minutes or hours |
| Output | A trend, a theme, a share | A reply, an escalation, a repost |
| Owned by | Brand, insights, strategy | Community, customer care |
What is the difference between social listening and social monitoring?
Monitoring is reactive and listening is analytical. A complaint about a broken lid is a monitoring job: find it, reply to it, fix it. Noticing that lid complaints doubled after a packaging change is a listening job, and nobody answering mentions one at a time would have spotted it.
The two use the same raw material, public posts that mention a brand, so tools often sell them as one thing. They are not the same skill. A tool built to alert fast can be shallow about patterns, and a tool built for analysis can be hours behind on a crisis.
Do you need both?
Most consumer brands need monitoring first, because an unanswered complaint costs something today. Listening pays off once there is enough volume to see a pattern in, which for a small brand can mean pooling its own mentions with its competitors' to have enough to read.
Does social listening include competitors?
It should. Your own mentions tell you how you are doing; a category's mentions tell you whether you are doing better or worse than the people you lose shelf space to. That comparison is where share of voice comes from.
How Monitor Mentions does each
Monitoring: the mention feed on every brand page, and an on-demand search for any handle, hashtag or phrase. Listening: each mention labelled with a subject and a tone, and counts across a brand's competitors, so the pattern is a count of rows rather than an opinion.
Social listening vs Social monitoring: questions people ask
Is social listening the same as social media monitoring?
They overlap but are not the same. Monitoring finds and responds to individual mentions. Listening analyses mentions in bulk to find trends, themes and changes in tone.
Which comes first, monitoring or listening?
Monitoring, for most brands. It has an immediate payoff in replies and fixes. Listening needs enough volume to show a pattern.
